The beaten landscapes of England’s north are fast becoming a breeding ground for fiercely original metal bands. Leeds four-piece Cotheria have thrown down the gauntlet to their peers and raised the bar for heavy music in the region.
During a period when the metal genre has become subdivided, at times along lines of fashion rather than of sound, Cotheria have never allowed themselves to bend or follow a tiresome deluge of trends. The four have combined their own individual influences and fused together an eclectic, unforgiving sound that has drawn sighs of relief from audiences expecting yet another derivative scene band.
Combining a crushing impact with subtle intricacies, epic soundscapes and essential melodies, Cotheria have nurtured a culture of strong songwriting. The band have laid a foundation of disarming, instantly engaging songs with their early material, providing a platform upon which they intend to build a lasting contribution to the music they love.
In vocalist Dave Eriya, Cotheria have a front man capable of answering the call of a generation of metal fans for the elusive combination of compelling lyrics and a brutal, honest, devastating delivery. He is supported by a tight, thunderous rhythm section and an approach to metal guitar playing that defies tired, formulaic riff patterns.
Early performances won instant plaudits and the band’s second show saw them support US hard rock merchants, Bullets & Octane. Cotheria have since focussed hard on building a loyal following with a number of unforgettable gigs.
In a genre so saturated, even the most talented bands are not certain to receive the attention they deserve. But Cotheria have arrived with a strong work ethic, an unswerving desire and the crucial, uninhibited sound of a young band who refuse to be ignored.
